Happy Birthday Kit Carson

Today is the 200th birthday of Carson City’s namesake, explorer Kit Carson. Kit, however, never visited the city that held his name. His name was actually given to the Carson River, which explorer John C. Fr?mont named after his knowledgeable scout while he was exploring the Sierra Nevada in the 1840s. Then the Carson Valley and Carson City were named after the river.

Bill Croke has a good look at Kit Carson’s life on his bicentennial.

  1. Not sure how you manage to find these facinating bits in the blogosphere but keep up the good work. Learned a couple of new things about our Namesake and also enjoyed the writers perspective on his somewhat misunderstood actions regarding treatment of Native Americans. Always amazed at how little attention is paid to our history and its unique characters and the parts they played in shaping the West. Rock on !
