Carson City Soroptimists at a Garter Bee to customize this year’s Nevada Day garters, each with a Lincoln-head penny, as Nevada Salutes President LIncoln. Clockwise round the table, from bottom left, are Earlene Miller, Lila Brown, Didi Chaney, Mary Luster, Jessie Keller, Pat Riggs, and Loretta Roche.
One of every seven garter pennies has the 2009 log cabin on the reverse, thanks to Trish Wilson of Downtown Coin. The garters sell for $5, and all funds raised benefit local organizations. Soroptimists will be selling garters Nevada Day during the parade at their booth on Ann Street, and elsewhere about town. Garters are also available this week at Downtown Coin, Platinum Plus Salon, Eagle Valley, Silver Oak, and Empire Ranch golf courses, and local businesses with a Soroptimist employee.
For more than 50 years here in Nevada’s capital, Soroptimist International of Carson City has been working to improve the lives of local women and children. Last year alone, this small local service club of professional women gave away $50,000 in Carson City, including thousands of dollars for breast cancer screenings, scholarships, and legal aid for domestic violence victims. With that kind of history, most residents probably know someone Soroptimists have touched: maybe honored as a Girl of the Month at Carson High School, or that received new shoes at Easter or a backpack filled with school supplies in September, or was able to buy textbooks at Western Nevada College. Carson City Soroptimists ask local citizens to wear a garter Nevada Day in a show of support, and to help them continue to help Carson City. For more information, contact Jean Bondiett at 883-7907.
