The Nevada State Legislature Building in downtown Carson has been having construction off and on for a couple of years now. But it’s mostly been the grounds around the building being worked on. The big one was when all the sidewalks and stone pavers around the building were replaced. But when I saw the construction fences go up again recently, I had no idea what was to come. We’re now in the middle of a major facelift on the building, the biggest one in nearly 30 years.
For comparison, let’s look at some older pictures. Ever since the 1990s, the Legislature has looked like this:
This stucco look, with the fake columns on the 3rd floor, and the weird dome over the entrance, is the “modern” look of the building. This remodel was done in the mid 1990s.
Before that, the Legislature had the same look since 1971 when it was built.
But now it’s pretty obvious that we are barreling towards a third look for the building. All of the 1990s facade has been peeled away from the front of the building, revealing that the original 1971 stone is still pretty intact underneath.
The rotunda has been stripped back to the steel beams.
The 90’s facade is still on the side of the building. You can see how it was just attached to the outside of the original stone. I assume that all of this is going away on the sides too?
Their brand new sidewalks are covered with plywood so they can be protected while the heavy machinery is brought in and the debris is removed.
This remodel was a real surprise to me. I don’t remember seeing anything about it in the news. I was trying to find any kind of announcement but nothing was coming up, other than this article from over 2 years ago talking about how the building needed new air conditioners and security cameras. I don’t think this is the same project they were talking about back then. And I haven’t been able to find any artwork of what it’s going to look like when the work is done. So I guess we’ll just have to watch it come together and see what we’re going to get when it’s finished!
Goodbye to this look.
