Construction on Carson Street through downtown has been going on for nearly a week now, with lane closures and heavy equipment clogging up the street. But now we’re going to look back before the construction began, at the core stretch of downtown between Musser and Telegraph. This part of road has narrow sidewalks and close storefronts, and until recently a fence keeping people from stumbling into traffic. The fence was supposed to be removed when the sidewalks were widened, but in a display of really weird timing the fence was actually removed three years ago, leaving narrow sidewalks with speeding traffic just inches away, not a pleasant walking experience. I think this part of downtown is going to benefit the most from the coming changes, and hopefully it will be a more pleasant place to walk when it’s all done.
