Carson City’s west side is full of beautiful old trees. The problem is, many of them are getting too old. Some of the trees are over 100 years old; they are growing weak, and limbs are falling off. Every time there is a wind storm, tree branches fall all over town. Some of the branches from these old trees are so big and heavy they can crush cars parked under them, or cause serious injury if someone is unlucky enough to be in the wrong spot. Or an entire tree will topple, potentially causing even worse damage. This photo from 2005 shows 400 West King Street surrounded by tall old trees, which probably dated back to when there was a school on this site. The trees tower over the building, but even back then you can see where a lot of the limbs had already had to be removed.
I remember this block having a couple of downed branches over the years, some with property damage. Finally it got to be too much, and either the city or the State, the owners of the building, cut down and removed all the tall trees. They were replanted with smaller trees that will take a long time to grow into the grandeur of their predecessors. A single one of the old trees still remains, for now. Hard to say how long they will let it stay.
It’s interesting how old the 2005 photo looks. I guess that’s a while ago now. I enjoy these photos of recent history.
