This is the Schwartz Service Station, seen in the small community of New Empire in 1948. New Empire was east of Carson City along Hwy 50, and it was mostly a residential neighborhood, but there were a few businesses. Schwartz Service was one of them. Standing out front is owner Emma Schwartz.
In the 78 years since this photo, Carson City has grown and engulfed New Empire, and now you’d never know it was once separate. But amazingly, the gas station at Schwartz Service still survives. It’s been expanded and upgraded with modern pumps, but they still dispense gas here, 78 years later. It is now known as the Country Store. Despite all the time that has passed, and the chain gas stations that have moved into New Empire like Arco, 7-11, and Maverik, it has survived.

Is any of the existing building the original?
