Ormsby House Hits 25 Years of Dormancy

Today marks 25 years since the Ormsby House closed its doors. It was October 29, 2000, when the new owners (at the time) shut down the hotel/casino for renovations. It was supposed to take 9 months, then it became 3 years, then 5, then we got to where we are today. Now it’s an albatross that nobody wants to take on, at least not at the price they’re asking, and all of the “new” renovations from 25 years ago are rotting in place without ever having been used.

I’ve written plenty about the Ormsby House over the years, and I’m tired of it. Linked below is the Ghosts of Carson article I wrote about it for the 20th anniversary. I’ll also link to the original news article about the closing, and my gallery of photos I took during the renovation, back when we were all so hopeful that it would actually reopen.

  1. It’s gotta be draining to you-all who still live in Carson City, to see it every time you visit downtown. So sad. Thanks for the ‘update.’ From Cheryl who now lives much too far away….

  2. It’s hard to accept that it’s been closed for so long. I had some nice times there in the early nineties. A bus tour from Reno to Lake Tahoe stopped there for a couple of hours. There was something unique and classy about the atmosphere at the Ormsby House.

  3. It will end up being imploded. No way to get back up to 2025+ building codes. All of the last 20year renovations are already decaying. I was soo excited in 2006 with the inside updates. Shame, it would have been the gem of Carson. Super props to this website with all of the hard work updating everyone. I have been checking back for 2 decades now. Love this site Then – and – Now updates.
