802 S Nevada Street Then and Now

In 2004 I took photos of this run-down house at 802 South Nevada Street. It was boarded up, graffitied, and for sale. I figured it didn’t have much time left, at least not in this state. If anyone bought it they would either tear it down or fix it up, so I wanted to preserve the memory of how it looked on this summer day.

Years later, on Facebook, I saw a photo posted by Tom Davis that he had taken of the same house in the 1970s. It looked better back then, though still plain and unassuming. Just an ordinary residence a couple of blocks off the main street. There are thousands of ordinary houses like this in Carson City, yet somehow Tom Davis and I had picked the same one to take photos of.

My intuition was correct, and the house was demolished soon after I took the photo. The new owners built a two-story duplex on the corner. The large cottonwood was removed, perhaps a victim of disease like so many other large trees around town. Sidewalks were put in, and new landscaping. This corner has been completely transformed.

Maybe someday this house will be in disrepair, and someone else will take a photo of it in its last days, continuing the chain.
