It’s that time of year again, time for the sheep to take to C Hill and start eating the grass. Every spring, large herds of sheep are allowed to roam on the hillsides just outside of town, eating all the cheatgrass that is growing. They are acting as an advance fire prevention unit, removing the flammable fuels from the city’s outskirts to try to ensure that another Waterfall Fire doesn’t happen here. Today the sheep were on the lower flanks of C Hill, right above Curry Street. I think they were taking a lunch break; most of them were laying down in a large group, with a single shepherd and herding dog watching over them.
