Tag: presbyterianchurchSunday, May 11, 2008The First Presbyterian Church is very close to the end of their long project to build a new sanctuary. The outside is nearly almost done, save for an odd window and sidewalk here and there. I think this is a nice structure, because it's big, but it's not imposing or overwhelming for the neighborhood. Tags: carsoncity construction presbyterianchurch Friday, October 12, 2007They're really picking up steam on the construction of the new sanctuary for the First Presbyterian Church on Carson's west side. Not only is the imposing cinder block bulk of the building finished, now the roof is also in place. Meaning they just beat the cold weather and snow, so they should be able to do a lot of work on the interior this winter to get it open quickly. Tags: carsoncity construction presbyterianchurch Saturday, September 22, 2007Construction on the new sanctuary for the First Presbyterian Church, at King and Division Streets, is humming right along. Here they are putting in the new roof trusses. Tags: carsoncity construction presbyterianchurch Saturday, July 21, 2007It's been a couple of weeks since I've done a construction update post, so let's take a look around town and see what the builders have been up to. I've been watching the work at Fifth and Stewart for a couple of months now. In that time they took what used to be a grassy field on the northeast corner of the intersection, plowed it under, and built the foundation for what looked like a pretty large building. I wasn't expecting how large it would be, though, until a couple of weeks ago when they started putting up the wall panels. I'm thinking this is an expansion to the State Printing Office, which is right next door and which this new building actually touches. This two story beast is really going to change the landscape of this intersection. Bodine's Casino has been working on the ground floor and parking garage for months and months now, and there's not much visible progress to show. But they did put up these signs at the corner advertising the fact that, yes, the new casino will keep the Bodine's name. The First Presbyterian Church has been steadily working on their new expansion along Division Street. The concrete for the floor has been poured, and you can see that it makes a semicircle around a central spot, presumably where the pulpit will be. The walls should start going up soon. The Carson-Tahoe Quail Park is almost finished framing up its first building, and a second one has been started in the background. The Marriott Hotel at Casino Fandango is almost done with framing too. Just a bit more to go on the roof, then they'll probably start putting on a layer of stucco. And finally, construction is starting on the last empty parcel left in the Carson Valley Plaza. This is one of the lots in the middle of the parking lot, right next door to the Pita Pit building they just put up last year. Already Qdoba Mexican Grill has been announced as one of the tenants, and the rest of the space is probably still unspoken for. First, the Bodine's Casino, at the corner of 395 and Clear Creek. Work on the basement parking garage is finished, and now they're laying the main casino floor on top of it. This work they're doing here is what's going to be at "ground level" of the new casino. Once they finish with the floor they should be able to start building upwards, and the casino itself will begin coming together. Right next door to Bodine's, the Carson City Fairgrounds is getting a complete makeover. This multi-million dollar project is kind of a side effect of the casino project, a promise the original developer made to improve the fairgrounds with a new rodeo arena and other facilities. And even though the original developer backed out of Bodine's, the new developer kept the promise. Hence all the work that's being done here to rebuild. Ribiero's new Carson-Tahoe Quail office/retail complex still only has one building underway, but the framing on that building is nearly complete. This is right next to Albertson's, on the site of the old Oasis Trailer Park. Of course the Casino Fandango always seems like it has hundred of new projects going on at any one time. Here, the new hotel tower is getting its fourth, and final, floor framed up. After this they'll top it off with a roof, then start on the interior. This Marriott Courtyard is supposed to open late this year. Work on the facade and the interior of the movie theater is still continuing. We're getting close to opening day; probably less than two months away now. And steel is rising on the casino expansion and sky bridge at the southwest corner of the Fandango. This steel skeleton now dwarfs the parking garage, and even dwarfs the new hotel in sheer height. This building will house the escalators that will take you up and over Curry Street so you can easily get to the movie theater from the casino. The expansion to the First Presbyterian Church has finally started construction. Last year the whole church was in danger of being demolished, but after negotiations with the city, only the back part was torn down last January to make way for a new sanctuary. The foundation for that new sanctuary has been poured, and the cinder block walls should start rising any day now. And finally, for the update that isn't, here's a photo of the Ormsby House, sitting as forlorn as ever. I still see people on the site, and there are work lights inside, so I hold out hope that work is actually progressing on the interior of the building. But from the outside, there is literally nothing going on. I think there's even an actual tumbleweed blowing by the building in this picture. And on that down note, we'll end this update. If you have any pictures of construction happening in other parts of town, don't hesitate to send them in! Tags: bodines carsoncity carsontahoequailpark casinofandango construction presbyterianchurch Thursday, January 18, 2007Construction is really taking off on the First Presbyterian Church on Nevada Street this week. This is the church that was in danger of being demolished because it was too old, too small, and too unstable to hold services in. But the community spoke out and convinced the congregation to save the church, at least the historic sanctuary which is the oldest part. Their plan now involves demolishing only part of the church complex, a part that was built in the mid 20th century, and then building a brand-new extension that melds with the old section. The heavy equipment was brought in, and within a matter of hours that middle-aged portion was reduced to rubble. These walls are part of the church's first expansion, which was built in 1890. In the 1940s another expansion was tacked onto it, the one that was destroyed today. So these walls are seeing the light of day for the first time in 60 years. In the long view you can make out the outline of where the old building used to be by following where the naked brick meets the painted brick. In my opinion, part of the project should be to strip off all that white paint and let the bricks be natural again. These fellows were finishing up the day's work by boarding up doorways and windows so the cold January air won't get in the church. As soon as this rubble is cleared, the foundation for the new sanctuary should start being laid. Tags: carsoncity presbyterianchurch Thursday, January 4, 2007I couldn't help myself. A few pictures of new stuff happening around the area. Some more new signalheads have been installed at Stephanie Way. A sign assures us that the signal will go live in "2 weeks". I think there's only one more new pole to install, the one that will rise out of the center island and contain the left turn signals. The Presbyterian Church in Carson City is gathering heavy equipment. I think this is all part of their project to tear down part of the church, renovate and reinforce the historic central sanctuary, which dates back to before Nevada became a state, and build a larger building to hold services in. And lastly, this is something I've been saying was necessary for years. They've finally put up a monument sign for Clear Creek Plaza. This has been needed ever since the new Wal*Mart opened, because it's nearly impossible to see the store from the highway. Particularly when it first opened, nobody knew exactly where it was or where to turn. I once ran into a lady in the Target parking lot asking me how to get to Wal*mart. She had completely missed the turn because there was no sign. So now, she won't have to worry about getting lost. And once they get a Trader Joe's sign installed in there, people won't have trouble finding that store either. Tags: carsoncity clearcreekplaza douglas presbyterianchurch stephanielight |
