Spring Ghost Walk

Posted Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 02:33 PM

The Carson City Ghost Walk has been an October tradition for over a decade. A week or two before Halloween some of the town's historic houses open their doors to guided tours and tell some of their best ghost stories. Recently the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau has begun putting on a Ghost Walk in the spring too. This year the spring tour will be on Saturday May 23, 2009. The 90-minute guided candlelight walking tour begins at 6pm and will feature 11 stops around the west side of town.

I missed this last summer when they first put it up. The Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau put up on YouTube a three-part look at the Carson City Ghost Walk, with footage from the 2006 walk.

Haunted Weekend

Posted Thursday, September 28, 2006 at 02:04 PM

Halloween is becoming a bigger deal every year in Carson City. The Ghost Walk itself has become a huge event over the last few years, and now the Visitor's Bureau is taking steps to make it even bigger by teaming up with their neighbor to the south, Douglas County. This year seems to be the inaugural year of the "Haunted Weekend", taking place October 20, 21 and 22.

For one price ($30), you can take part in four different ghostly events around the Carson and Eagle Valleys:

  • October 20: Meet the ghosts of Gardnerville on the guided Haunted Ghost Walk. Meet at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center. Tours depart hourly between 6:30-8:30 p.m.
  • October 21 Day: The popular Carson City Kit Carson Trail Ghost Walk begins at 9 a.m. and departs every half-hour until 3 p.m. from Third & Carson Streets. This year's theme is Grave Concerns. Guided walking tours offer ghostly glimpses into the residents who made history here. There are two tours:
    • The Resurrection Tour features spirits appearing in: Brewery Arts Center, Esser Home, United Methodist Church, Brougher Bath House and Rinckel Mansion.
    • The Remembrance Tour features spirits appearing in: Stewart Nye Home, Edwards House, The Bliss Bungalow, and Bliss Mansion.
  • October 21 Evening: Cemeteries hold special fascinations for many and make one wonder about those buried beneath. Wonder no more about these "past lives" as the ghosts of the historic Genoa Cemetery come to life between 6:30-8 p.m. Meet at the cemetery.
  • October 22: Learn even more about Genoa's haunted sites on the Genoa Ghost Walk between 10:30-11:30 a.m. Meet at Genoa Courthouse Museum.

This seems to be a pretty excellent promotion, and a good demonstration of the two counties coming together to attract visitors. Of course you can buy tickets to each of these events separately as well. The Carson City Ghost Walk is $15, and each of the others is $5 apiece.

You can make reservations by calling (775)987-7410, or download the PDF form (80kb) and fax it in.

Carson City Ghost Walk

Posted Thursday, October 20, 2005 at 12:02 PM

The Carson City Ghost Walk is coming up this Saturday. Every year, around Halloween, the most haunted houses in Carson City open their doors for a guided tour, and let the public in to hear spooky tales of former residents that never quite left. There are actually two separate ghost walks, each one visiting a number of different houses, so you get to pick which walk you want to go on. This year the two walks are:

The Superstition Walk - You’ll visit the Bliss Mansion and Bliss Bungalow, the former St. Teresa’s Church, and the Stewart-Nye and Edwards homes. You’ll also hear stories about the Yerington, Jones, Rickey, Crowell, Curry, Chartz and Smail homes.

The Spells Walk - You’ll visit the Brougher Bath mansion, Brewery Arts Center, and the Esser, Rinckle and Ferris mansions. You’ll also see the Orion Clemens home, Methodist Church, Ormsby-Rosser house, St. Charles Hotel, and the Hyman-Olcovich House.

The Ghost Walk is one day only, Saturday, October 22nd. It starts at 9:30am, and tours leave from the Nevada State Museum every half hour until 2:30pm. Each tour spends about an hour and a half walking around Carson City’s historic west side, strolling the streets and visiting the open houses. Tickets are $15 per adult, and it’s recommended that you reserve a spot by calling 687-7410. I think everything before noon is already sold out.
