Tag: fireSaturday, June 14, 2008Brown smoke on the horizon today. That means there's wildfire somewhere. Anybody have any idea where this one is, and where the smoke is coming from? Update: As pointed out in the comments below, this smoke is from the Humboldt Fire in Paradise, California. It's about 150 miles away, but the wind is blowing just right to bring the smoke from this 23,000 acre fire our way. Stay indoors if you're sensitive to smoke! First is the story about the fire that started at the Fourth Ward Schoolhouse in Virginia City Friday morning, which by all rights should have burned the place down. It was only because they had installed a sprinkler system during a previous remodel (using money from Jack Daniels, of all places) the the fire was put out and the historic building saved. The Nevada Appeal of course had to make a "firewater" joke here. Second is the story about how the V&T is running out of money, and might not have enough to finish the rail line all the way down the Carson City. I mean, if you had asked me last week I would have had no idea, but when I saw him on the front page of the paper today, there was a faint recognition in the back of my mind, like I wasn't surprised. So maybe I did know at one time. But anyway, it's got to be embarrassing to get on the front page of the paper for accidentally burning down your own garage and office, like Eddings did. But it's even more embarrassing to show up on the front page still wearing your robe and slippers. Ouch. If I ever do anything stupid enough to make the paper, I'll have to remember to get dressed first. Apparently it's along Curry Street by the Capital Ford dealership. Update: Big mystery. I drove by today and saw no trace of fire. Did anyone else see the smoke plume? Update: Thanks to a commenter, I found where the fire was. At the end of Oneida Street, right where it hits the mountain, was an abandoned mobile home on an empty lot. It burned last night, throwing up a huge plume of smoke. I'm no arson investigator, but that looks like kids playing around to me. What else would cause an abandoned trailer to burst into flames?
