Tag: diningMonday, October 20, 2008The Carson Times has a review of Kim Lee's Sushi & Teri, which just this summer moved into the old Java Joe's location in the Kitzmeyer Furniture Factory. Kim Lee's has always been my favorite sushi place, as well as the first sushi I ever had, 12 years at their Reno location. The article makes one mistake, though, saying that the restaurant is new to Carson City. Kim Lee's actually has been in Carson for years, located one block away at the corner of Telegraph and Plaza. And before that it was in the Crossroads Shopping Center on Winnie for about a year. So it's actually been in Carson for a long time, moving from place to place. That one error doesn't take away from the glowing review the article gives, and I definitely agree that if you're going to go to one place for sushi, go to Kim Lee's. I actually haven't been for a few years, because now that I'm old I can't splurge on $20 for dinner anymore. And it's hard to sit at the bar (the only place to sit in a sushi place) when you have little kids. Oh well. Some day I'll go back. Have a Happy Roll for me. And I have to say it was everything we expected. Nice, friendly staff, good food, and an atmosphere that makes you want to come back again and again. I think we definitely have a new addition to our downtown dining choices. Which is good, because B'Sghetti's is a great place, but really you can only go there so many times before the waitresses start recognizing you. I got the Shepherd's Pie, which was quite flavorful, if a little smaller than I expected. It came with a side of brown gravy, which I think you were supposed to pour over the top, but I used to dip fries into. My wife got the Greek Salad, and made it into a wrap. And while it could have used a little more feta cheese, there certainly wasn't anything wrong with it. A variety of restaurants have come and gone into this ground floor space of the St Charles hotel, and most of them have been forgettable. The Cafe Del Rio is the only one that really stands out in my memory, and even they had to move up to Virginia City to make a success of themselves. But the Firkin and Fox is notable not just because of all the renovations they've done to the place (including freshening the outside of the building, and making it into one of the best-looking buildings in all of downtown), but also because it's a good restaurant that would probably be a success no matter what the location. The Firkin and Fox is usually packed even now, in the winter, when you have to dodge deep icy puddles to get to it. I can only imagine when the summer comes, and Third Street turns into a public market on Tuesdays, how packed and popular this place is going to be. I think the St. Charles has found a new long-term resident, finally, and it's about time it happened too. Me neither, at least until last Christmas when we drove over to Sacramento and saw them everywhere. But the Sacramento area has plenty of restaurants I've never heard of, so I really didn't give Mr. Pickle's a second thought. Looked like just another sandwich place. So we got home to Carson City, and within a week I heard about what new restaurant opening up in town? That's right, a Mr. Pickle's. The place we had never heard of. So of course we had to travel over there for lunch and check them out. And you know what? It's really pretty good. You'd never know it by looking at the inside of the place. You'd never even know it was a chain restaurant. The inside is so bland and the sign almost looks homemade, so if I hadn't seem them in Sacramento I would have thought it was just some local operation. The food is super good and super filling, though. My wife got a turkey sandwich, and she was only able to eat about a third of it. I had a #16 - "The Cousin", basically a chicken parmesan sandwich. I chowed down the whole thing, and now I'm thinking I might have to skip dinner. So Mr. Pickle's has been added to our list of good eats, if you're in the mood for a filling sandwich. If you want to go try it out yourself, it's located in the North Carson Crossing shopping center, right next to the new College Parkway Wal*Mart. I added it to the Around Carson Dining Guide, and the Carson City store also apparently has its own website at www.mrpicklescc.com, but it doesn't seem to be working now. And don't forget to get a "Giant Pickle" to go! Tags: carsoncity dining mrpickles |
