Lock your doors and park your cars in the garage, David Scott Killen is out of jail. You may remember David Scott Killen as the pleasant fellow who went on a shooting spree with a pellet gun in Carson City, shooting out several windows on Carson Street. And the window of a car stopped next to him at a stop sign. Or you may remember him from when he stole mail in Carson City, while awaiting trial for the window shootings. Or you may even remember him for a string of arson fires back in 2002. He spent time in prison for that one, but apparently not enough.

So now, this fellow who the District Attorney characterized as having "the emotional maturity of a malicious 14-year-old" is back on the streets. He was sentenced to a year in jail back in January, but served less than ten months. I guess we can take comfort knowing that he'll be back behind bars again soon enough, but what havoc will he wreak this time?

Sometimes you need to throw away the key.

My favorite comment on the Record Courier story? "This guy is much like the one in the bowl that won't go down...not even with a second flush."

David Scott Killen, the guy who drove around town last year shooting out windows with a BB gun, has finally been sentenced for the crime. One year in jail, minus time served. The District Attorney said he had "the emotional maturity of a malicious 14-year-old."

But I guess the same questions are popping up in everybody's mind. First, why does it take an entire year to hand down a ruling in a case like this? Because of the delay he was put on house arrest, a house arrest which of course he broke, and he was caught in December stealing checks out of mailboxes. Second, how does he end up with only one year in jail? Especially since it wasn't just vandalism, he pointed the gun at people, and shot out car windows. This is the kind of person who isn't going to get rehabilitated after just one year of being put away. If anything it will make him angrier. The sentence should have been a lot worse.

He's trying to argue that he needs to be out of jail so he can support his wife and kid. Probably by stealing more checks. We haven't seen the last of this guy. Look for him to make headlines again with new crimes about a year from now.

I went downtown this morning to check out the windows that were shot out along Carson Street in yesterday's vandalism spree. Looking at the list the paper published it seems like there were more vehicle windows than building windows. But here are a few storefronts that were hit.

Even small towns like Carson City aren't safe from shooting sprees. Of course, ours involve pellet guns, not rifles, and shooting at windows, not people. But still.

Yesterday afternoon a couple of guys got it in their heads to go joyriding up and down Carson Street, shooting out windows along the way. They shot about a dozen windows, then an hour later came back and shot a dozen more. They were finally stopped in the Ranchos after one of the victims called in their license plate number. Amazingly, only the driver was arrested. His passenger was free to go. I'd love to hear what evidence the police have to convince them he wasn't involved.

The driver, who was arrested, is a convicted arsonist who was just paroled from prison last August. So much for rehabilitation, I guess. I suppose we're just lucky he decided to only go after windows this time, and not return to his firestarting ways.
