Tag: dangberghomeranchSunday, October 25, 2009Press Release: I'm excited to tell you about a special exhibit at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park over Nevada Day weekend. We've selected numerous items from the park's large collection of historic clothing and will present them in various rooms of the Dangberg home. On display will be women's, men's and children's clothing from the 1890s through the 1960s. Featured will be clothing worn by Henry Fred Dangberg, Jr., and his wife, Gertrude. Two of Mrs. Dangberg's dresses from the 1890s and additional dresses she wore from the 1920s through the 1960s will be on display. We also have some of her jewelry to show off, as well as a beautiful silver dresser set dating from about 1900. Mr. Dangberg's hats and business suits from the 1930s and 1940s will provide a male contrast to his wife's clothing. Other highlights of the exhibit will be clothing worn by the Dangbergs' four daughters throughout their lifetimes, beginning with their childhoods in the 1910s. You'll see evening gowns from before World War II, and selected hats, gloves and other accessories. A collection of baby clothes from the early 1930s, recently donated to the park by Steve "Dinky" Achard, will make its Carson Valley debut during the exhibit. The exhibit will be open from noon to 4:00 pm on Friday, October 30, through Sunday, November 1. Reservations are not required; you can come anytime you'd like during those hours. Admission is $3.00 for adults and free for children 12 and under. Dress in warm clothing, as the inside of the house is a little cool this time of year. The park is located at 1450 Highway 88, one-half mile south of the Carson Valley Swim Center. The public is invited to attend this free outdoor program, which begins at 11 a.m. Rocha will set the record straight about 19th and 20th century Carson Valley historical myths, separating fact from fiction. He will address the long-standing, but untrue, belief that Dr. Eliza Cook was Nevada’s first female physician, the conflicting claims on the inspiration for George Washington Gale Ferris' invention of the Ferris Wheel and the half-truths that have become entrenched in the public mind regarding film actress Mary Pickford’s Nevada connections. He will explore these and other dubious claims related to local history and discuss how such untruths develop. “People are obsessed with superlatives-they want the first, biggest, tallest, last,” Rocha explained. “But they sometimes derive these superlatives from impressions, not research. Many of Carson Valley’s myths, it seems, developed in part due to efforts to promote the area as the birthplace of Nevada, a place that is a little more special than the rest of the state.” Until his recent retirement, Rocha was Nevada’s State Archivist for 28 years. A Nevada resident since the age of three, he is an avid historian, writing both books and articles on a wide range of topics. He produced four historical documentaries and has provided his expertise to both local and national television programs, both on-camera and off. The event will feature an exhibit of antique toys, Christmas cards and decorations from the park's extensive collection. Visitors will enjoy hearing music played on the Dangberg's 1916 Knabe and Company grand piano. Displayed exhibit items will include: a variety of stuffed animals, dolls, card games and other toys from the early decades of the 20th century, as well as board games, construction sets and other play items from the 1930s and 1940s. These items are examples of the childhood play from two generations of the Dangberg family. "The park's collection of antique toys is a lot of fun," said Park Interpreter Mark Jensen. "We have Kewpie dolls, early Mickey Mouse toys, cast-iron trains, 'Tinker Toys,' board games from the 1910s such as 'Department Store' and 'Sailor Boy,' 'Lincoln Logs' and other and other toys that will make park visitors laugh, think and reminisce." In addition to the toys and games, the park will also display a variety of historic Christmas cards, sent to the Dangberg family by notable figures in Carson Valley and Nevada's history, including other ranching families, Nevada governors and other politicians. Vintage ornaments, a silver Christmas tree and other holiday decorations will also be shown. In the tradition of hospitality established by the Dangberg family, cookies and hot beverages will be offered. The exhibit will be open from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 12-15, 2008. Admission is $3.00 for adults and is free for children 12 and under. Visitors should dress in warm clothing. Information regarding the location of the park can be found at parks.nv.gov/hr.htm, or by calling 775-783-9417.
