Carson City was smaller and white trashier than I imagined it to be. The casinos were sad. Everything was a casino, in true Nevada fashion. Christmas on a cracker, the CVS was an effing casino. And a busy one at that. None of it was glam. All of it was pathetic. There was casino night at the church even.

Hell, putting a slot machine at a gas station is like bringing a case of booze to a wedding on an Indian Reservation.

Jeff Moser of Bike Carson has started a new blog, The Carson Gardener. All about his adventures and misadventures in the garden. I bet the garden has been very happy this week, with all the rain. It's in for quite a shock over the next four months as summer drought starts to set in.

The Viewliner Limited, a blog featuring images of Americana, has put up a post about Carson City, with a few postcards of downtown as it was in the 1950s. There are even a couple there I haven't seen before.

Two more local blogs that I've discovered, Ann Onn Everything and Maven and Meddler. They don't exactly write about local issues all the time, but that's not a requirement to get my attention (although I do love placeblogs). I've added both of them to the right sidebar.

After a three-month hiatus, No Safe Place is back on the air. And a good thing too, since the Carson City-based blogs can still be counted in single digits, so we need all we can get. Plus it's a good blog, plus he said, "I am going to write for me now." Well, good. That's what all the best blogs do. If you're writing out of some sense of obligation, it's going to show. Just write about what you want to write about, and if people don't want to read it, too bad for them.

I was clued into a new Carson City blog, BBQ, Grillin' and Smokin' in Carson City, Nevada, where Tony shares his recipes and techniques for barbecuing in the Eagle Valley. I'd especially like to have one of those pizzas right about now.

Ryan Jerz on Wednesday took a glider up from the Minden Airport, and did a story for Travel Nevada about the experience. He went up for about 45 minutes, and flew over the Valley and Lake Tahoe. Looks pretty cool, and of course he has photos and video of the trip.

The last (and only) time I went on a glider was about 17 years ago. They must have changed a lot since then. We didn't go over Lake Tahoe, and we sure didn't do a loop!

The Good, the Bad, the Spin has a few good words to say about Around Carson today. it was prompted by the Reno News and Review's "Best Blogger" survey (scroll down halfway), of which none of the top winners were on his list of favorites. So he wrote his own "Best Of" list, and Around Carson is the first one on the list. Must be alphabetical.

For what it's worth, I guess my favorites could be considered all the ones that I currently subscribe to in Google Reader. Which is nearly all of these listed, including Bob's.

I was forwarded the link to a new Carson City-based blog. A Little On the Lighter Side , written by a Carson resident, seems to be brand new, and so far is featuring Weight Watchers-friendly recipes.

There's a new placeblog for Reno. Titled This Is Reno, and run by Ryan Jerz, it can be found at www.thisisreno.com.
