The state orphanage was built on East Fifth Street in 1870. It was made out of wood, and a fire in 1902 brought it down to the ground. So this stone orphanage was built in 1903 to replace it. Fir sixty years this dormitory housed orphans and other wards of the state, until 1963. That's when the orphanage was torn down and small single-family cottage built in its place. The site is now home to the DCFS cottages and the Boys and Girls Club.
The children's home was the subject of Then and Now #13.

My name is Shawne Miller ( Redford) I am looking for a half sister who was placed in this orphanage by Henry James Redford and Dorothy Black. I would like to talk with her as we share the same father but, different biological mothers. I have spoken with Kylene Redford (sister) and trying to track her down.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
