About The Site

Around Carson is a new experiment for Carson City, a website where the people who live here get to talk about their town, in their own words. There are no gatekeepers, no editors, just you and your voice. It is (or will be when it's finished) set up to allow anyone and everyone to post an article, story, opinion piece, blog, or even a photograph. Your submission can't be rejected (well, within reasonable guidelines) and it will be available to everyone immediately.

This type of site is known as a “hyperlocal” or a “citizen's media” or a “grassroot journalism” site. With the rise of the Internet, we no longer have to wait for someone else to decide what's news and what isn't. Or what “human interest” stories get run. Or which letters to the editor get printed. Here at Around Carson, you get to decide what the top story of the day is. Every submission is accepted, no matter how big or small. This site is built by you, the readers.

What can you talk about? Anything you want. Breaking news, politics, schools, shopping, family, traffic, life. Whatever you want to get out to your neighbors, or to the world.

Who am I? I'm Scott Schrantz, creator and caretaker of Around Carson. I'm a computer and web professional who's lived in the Carson area for over 20 years. I've been running a blog for a few years now (at www.computer-vet.com/weblog), but I always worried about posting local news and info because I though it might turn off a general audience. I thought it would be great to have a local place to go on the web that was just about what was happening in Carson City and the Carson Valley. But there weren't any web sites like that, so I decided to build my own.

We're just in the earliest stages of starting out here at Around Carson, so cut us some slack if the site is a little buggy in spots.
