The High Costs of Railroading

Proposed 'New' V&T Bridge

The big question that the Nevada Appeal is asking is who is going to pay for rebuilding the V&T? And while that's a meaty question, I think the bigger one we're overlooking is why is it going to cost so much to rebuild the line? They're talking about it costing $55 million to finish the line all the way down to Carson, and that's money on top of what they've already spent. They've already finished two of the largest challenges facing the effort to rebuild the line: crossing the Overman Pit and reopening Tunnel #2. Those parts are done, but it's still going to take $55 million more? I think that's what we should be investigating, why that figure has to be so high.
